Congratulations Dr. Bauchinger!
Franziska Bauchinger successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled "Insights into community composition, function and structure of the human gut microbiome" on June 30, 2025.
In her thesis Franziska used data analysis techniques to explore the complex dynamics of the human microbiome. She investigated the concept of microbial keystone taxa and found that their detection is highly sensitive to taxonomic resolution and that they act as stabilizing agents in sub-communities of the microbial community. She also studied mucosal glycan degraders in the gut microbiome and found both competitive as well as opportunistic degraders co-existing.
The board of examiners included Stefanie Widder (Meduni Vienna), Melanie Schirmer (Technical University Munich), and Christina Kaiser (University of Vienna).
