Hanna Koch new Senior Scientist at DOME
We are delighted to welcome Hanna Koch as a new Senior Scientist at the Division of Microbial Ecology (DOME), CeMESS.
Hanna's research centers on the microorganisms that facilitate nitrogen transformation processes, which play a critical role in ecosystem productivity and sustainability. Hanna completed her PhD at the University of Vienna, where she focused on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and their metabolic capabilities beyond nitrite oxidation. She then continued with postdoctoral positions at the University of Oldenburg (Germany) and Radboud University (Netherlands), deepening her expertise in microbial physiology, genomics, and nitrogen cycling. Later, as a Scientist at the AIT – Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, she expanded her research to plant microbiomes and strategies to foster beneficial plant–microorganism interactions.
In September 2025, Hanna returned to the University of Vienna to join DOME, where she continues her work on nitrogen cycling microorganisms. Her research combines cultivation-based microbiology with genomic and bioinformatic approaches to uncover how nitrifiers contribute to ecosystem processes.
