Jacob Bobonis received an EMBO fellowship as well as an HFSP Fellowship for his project “Viral cooperation as a novel mechanism to overcome bacterial defenses”. Jacob's project revolves around the hypothesis that in the wild, in contrast to in vitro, the lifestyles of bacterial viruses (phages) are not sculpted by binary interactions between them and their hosts, but rather evolve by interacting with co-occuring phages during co-infecting the same bacterium. He is interested in how phage anti-immunity systems interact cooperatively or antagonistically against the multifaceted bacterial host immune system. Jacob will investigate this topic in the research group of Martin Polz at the Division of Microbial Ecology.
Congratulations, Jacob!
